Gwreiddiau Roots

Launched in 2019, the Gwreiddiau Roots Project began as an initiative to deepen understanding of the local environment and food production. Now in its fifth year, the project has evolved to explore broader themes of land use, nature recovery, and community connections. At its heart, Roots continues to inspire learners with a greater awareness of the natural world and how people interact with it.

OUTDOOR LEARNING

Over the years, Roots has provided enriching outdoor learning experiences to local primary schools across the Haven area and Haverfordwest, fostering curiosity and engagement with the landscape. As the project moves into its next phase, its focus will shift to the Daugleddau Estuary, a remarkable river shaped at the end of the last Ice Age, where the Western and Eastern Cleddau, Carew, and Cresswell rivers converge.

This vast and dynamic waterway is Wales’ largest river estuary, home to a commercial port, a thriving energy sector, and a vibrant recreational boating community. Despite its industrial significance, the estuary remains a haven for wildlife, with steep wooded banks and protected areas within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. As a Special Area of Conservation, it supports species such as otters, herons, seals, and swans, making it an ideal setting for place-based education in line with the Curriculum for Wales’ focus on experiential, community-centred learning.

Thanks to the generous support of South Hook LNG, Gwreiddiau Roots will continue to break down barriers to outdoor learning by providing subsidised trips and resources, ensuring Pembrokeshire learners can experience the estuary’s unique environmental and cultural heritage firsthand. Without their funding, this project would not be possible. Through hands-on exploration, students will engage with pressing topics such as biodiversity, climate change, and local career opportunities, fostering a deeper connection to their surroundings and inspiring future custodians of this extraordinary landscape.

NEW DIGITAL LEARNING PLATFORM

To extend its impact, the project will also develop a digital learning platform, offering schools across Pembrokeshire and beyond access to a wealth of educational resources, enquiry templates, and interactive materials. This will ensure that the benefits of the Gwreiddiau Roots Project continue to grow, providing lasting opportunities for discovery and engagement with Pembrokeshire’s incredible natural heritage.

“We are pleased to have a long-standing relationship with Pembrokeshire Coast Charitable Trust, through the Roots Project. At the Terminal, we have over 100 acres dedicated as a specific nature conservation area which we manage sustainably, so we appreciate the importance of Pembrokeshire’s diverse nature habitats. Through the Roots initiative, we are proud to support an education programme that engages children in the outdoors, creating opportunities to connect with the varied landscapes, communities and food networks that exist in this very special County.”
